AWARD
BOOKS/NOTABLE BOOKS PATHFINDER
Introduction: This pathfinder is intended
primarily for Library Media Specialists. The purpose of this pathfinder is to
provide necessary information for the LMS as he or she selects books to enhance
the media center collection. Media center collections should include various award
books and notable books. This pathfinder will serve as a starting point for including
some of those books in library collections. I did not include those notable
book lists and best book list resources that we already addressed in class such
as School Library Journal, Hornbook, Booklist, and Kliatt.
Key Terms: I utilized the following key terms
when searching the OSU Library OPAC: “award
book?”, “award winner?”, “notable book?” I utilized the following key terms
when searching Google: “children’s book awards” and “children’s notable books.”
I also searched for subject areas websites in Google. I searched for “national
teachers of english” and then replaced “english” with the other subject areas.
I then searched the subject area websites using the key terms “award books” and
“notable books.” More specific terms that I used in Google included “sequoyah
ok book award” and “coretta scott king book awards.”

Database:
Childrens Literature
Comprehensive Database (CLCD) (I am not sure how to cite a database. Sorry.)
This database contains “1,200,000
catalog records in MARC format that have children's headings assigned. These records come with all of the
official cataloging data, subject terms, and annotations. In addition, the
database contains more than 300,000 critical reviews of thousands of children's
books, ranging from the earliest baby board books to novels and nonfiction for
young adults, and an average of more than 1500 new reviews are added to the
database monthly. Information about awards, honors, prizes given to specific
books is also provided along with information about reading measurement program
information as well as best book lists and state reading lists.” (Info copied
and pasted from CLCD) CLCD enables you to search for award winning books by
genre, subject, and so on. I use this database ALL the time for work and now
for the Adv. Children’s Lit. class. It is available via OSU library’s homepage http://www.library.okstate.edu
